Bilal Lashari’s directorial has been under fire since 2017 from the producer of the original Maula Jatt Sarwar Bhatti. The latter objected to the use of his film’s title, character and even dialogues under intellectual property rights.
The makers of ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ however proceeded and even released the film’s theatrical trailer last year. The film was slated for release on Eid ul Fitr 2019. However the legal battle hindered the release. The upcoming Punjabi flick is one of the most anticipated films of recent times. The film stars Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Humaima Malik and Gohar Rasheed.
The good news is that after a series of court proceedings and stay orders both parties have come to a settlement. As per Images, the settlement states that Sarwar Bhatti has copyrights and trademark on the cinematography of the 1979 film Maula Jatt. However he has decided to allow the makers to use his original content for the sake of cinema revival and goodness of his heart extended this gesture.
However this permission is only confined to making, promoting, releasing and distribution of this particular film. No other film in future can violate this copyright which solely resides with Sarwar Bhatti’s Bahoo Films.
As per the settlement a statement will be recorded before Intellectual Property Tribunal, Lahore. The purpose is just to reiterate the fact that the dispute has in fact been resolved. The producer Ammara Hikmet can proceed with her film and use use the content of Maula Jatt.
The Legend of Maula Jatt is reportedly being slated for Eid ul Fitr. In that case the film will be clashing with 5 other major films. Check out the list of film releasing on Eid here.
