Pakistani Cinema has undergone a huge resurgence in recent times, with 2015 seeing a multitude of some good quality films being released. After watching the much hyped and anticipated “Jawani Phir Nahi Ani”, I can safely say Pakistani Cinema has fully revived. This probably is the best comedy film to come out of Pakistan since the whole revival scene started in 2007 with Shoaib Mansoor’s “Khuda Kay Liye”. Finally Pakistan has its own big budget comedy-masala entertainment film. The whole cast did a great job with roles they were given, Nadeem Baig did a pretty good job as the director and Vasay Chaudary penned an excellent script.

The story starts out with three friends( Hamza Abbasi, Ahmad Butt and Vasay Chaudary) trapped in a miserable marriage with their respective spouses (Ayesha Khan, Uzma Khan and Sarwat Gillani) and out comes the hotshot lawyer friend of the guys from U.S, Sherry(Humayun Saeed) to take the guys with him on a fun filled week’s holiday to Bangkok where they could relive the days of their youth and party. The start of the movie is hilarious with some really insane comedic performances by the duo of Ahmad Butt and Vasay Chaudary while Sarwat Gillani also shines as the hotheaded Pashtun Wife. Some of the scenes were hysterical homages or references to some previous Pakistani Films, which are bound to leave you laughing and yes The “Piece Bara Taght hai” guy is somehow involved in one of those scenes. The four guys do make it to Bangkok, Thailand where all hell breaks loose and some very humorous situations arise too.

Mehwish Hayat looks incredibly seductive as Marina and her father being played by Ismail Tara does a remarkable job as The Thai Don/Arab Sheikh. Normally many movies do have this tendency to have a weaker second half than the first half but JPNA has no such problem with the introduction of veterans like Javed Sheikh and Bushra Ansari, who as usual brought their A-Game to this film and made the second half such a comedic delight. Sohai Ali Abro was also terrific as a popular-culture obsessed girl, who has to take a selfie at every occasion.

“Jawani Phir Nahi Ani” is a funny movie, flat out, all the way through. Its setup is funny. Every situation is funny. Most of the dialogues are funny, almost line by line. Some of the cultural references are incredibly witty, like one scene where a Judge moans for his letdown of a son named Arsalan or the scene where Hamza Abbasi shouts out Imran Khan’s famous slogan. The climax is very engaging and entertaining with Humayun Saeed’s two love interests and their families converging in a farcical clash with each other. We also get to see some dramatic stuff towards the end that might involve a courtroom. Hamza Abbasi gave some really intense performance towards that period and Humayun Saeed was fantastic and showed his versatility with a wide range of acting skills. If the movie ends somewhat conventionally, well, it almost has to; narrative housecleaning requires it.

One could argue that the whole romantic angle between the characters of Humayun Saeed, Mehwish Hayat and Sohai Ali Abro could have been explained better but its asking for a tad too much in a movie of limited time rather than a drama serial. The music was decent but not something that uplifted the whole scope of the movie with the exception of “Jalwa”. Some of the situation were quite similar to many of the Bollywood film cliches like one scene quite reminiscent of a shot from “Housefull 2” . But overall the very minute flaws did not at all damage the movie in its entirety.

“Jawani Phir Nahi Ani” has to be the new benchmark in terms of a mass targeted entertainment film. No such was movie was ever made in Pakistan but kudos to all the people behind it, for risking it all and making a marvelously entertaining movie in process. There is something in this movie for all types of audiences. This movie is most certainly on par with many of the better Bollywood comedies. And let me clarify the controversies that film’s story line is not at all copied from any mainstream Hindi or English film.. This movie is definitely on march to create new records and for good reason too. To sum up, your Eid is not complete without watching this as it is one of the best comedy films to come out in recent times.. Don’t Miss It!!
