Three Oscars winner Sam Mendes directorial 1917 had seen its theatrical release in Pakistan three weeks back and the film has done well at the box office so far. The film was catering to niche audiences and the reach of such films is limited at the box office.
As per estimates, 1917 has clocked around PKR 10.5 million in three weeks which is a very good result considering opening week was PKR 4 million. The film did get a boost of Oscars in its third week hence having minimal drop in third week.
The film is chasing the numbers of another niche targeted film Ford v Ferrari. The only difference between the two is the star cast. Ford v Ferrari featured known actors i.e. Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
Ford v Ferrari had roped in PKR 6.5 million in its opening week which was around 40% more than 1917. Ford v Ferrari trended quite well in the following weeks and its three weeks gross had stood at PKR 13.7 million.
Ford v Ferrari had a lead of 40% after first week however that lead has now shrunk to around 23% at the close of third week for 1917. Ford v Ferrari had a strong fourth week as well and it had concluded run around PKR 18 million.
It will be interesting to see how close will 1917 get to this number before end of its run. Keep an eye out on this space for more box office information.
