This decade (2010-2019) stands out as the best one for Pakistani cinema as we saw massive growth in terms of gross box office. In previous decade none of the Pakistani film had managed to hit even PKR 100 million at domestic box office however this decade 24 films managed to hit the coveted mark and highest grosser stands over PKR 500 million.
Many films created new benchmarks and many actors held records but at the box office biggest star of the decade was Humayun Saeed and he leads by far. Whenever his film had hit screens, the box office returns were massive. Many times his films faced a major clash yet the films went on to become highest grossing films of all time.
There are definitely other actors who did exceedingly well. Second and third spots will go to Fahad Mustafa and Hamza Ali Abbasi respectively. Hamza had just two films in the whole decade where he had prominent screen presence as Waar and Main Hoon Shahid Afridi weren’t riding on his star power.
Humayun Saaed started the decade with Main Hoon Shahid Afridi which was a clean hit and for the first time we saw a sports film earning well at Pakistani box office. Couple of years later we saw Bin Roye which became first romantic drama to hit PKR 100 million mark. Same year Humayun Saeed conquered box office with Jawani Phir Nahi Ani which became first film in the history to top PKR 300 million mark in Pakistan.
Jawani Phir Nahi Ani’s records stood for two years when in 2017 Humayun Saeed himself broke them with Punjab Nahi Jaungi. The film became first one in the history to hit PKR 350 million mark. Next year Humayun took box office to another level with Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 becoming first and only film in the history to top PKR 400, 450 and 500 million marks. Released in 2018, Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 is still highest grossing film of all time with huge lead and it is yet to be seen that which film will beat Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2.
Commutative box office gross of all the films of Humayun Saeed tops PKR 1.5bn this decade which is far ahead of any other star. Fahad Mustafa stands second with commutative box office numbers falling shy of PKR 1.25bn whereas Hamza Ali Abbasi is 3rd. These three are the only actors whose’s boxoffice returns top PKR 1bn in Pakistan.
What must be noticed here is this that most of the opening records have belonged to Humayun Saeed this decade. This has been the major difference between him and other stars through out the decade. Most of his opening records have come despite clashes. Humayn’s Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 holds all the opening records for Pakistani films right now and the film had a massive clash with Parwaaz Hai Junoon and Load Wedding upon release.
Humayun Saeed is now gearing up for multiple releases in the form of London Nahi Jaunga and Love Guru. If the former lives upto the expectations then Humayun Saeed will become first actor in the history whose’s commutative box office gross will hit PKR 2bn.
