Pakistani cinema was seeing fantastic growth in last few years. Going back in 2009 it seemed a dark time when there were very few releases and very limited number of productive screens. But it got better each year. Films like My Name Is Khan in 2010 emerged a mega Blockbuster Since then each year biggest grosser chart was filled with Hindi films.
Next year saw big blockbuster Bol leading the pack but other than that it was all full of Hindi films. Don 2 took record start of it’s time and emerged biggest blockbuster for Shah Rukh Khan in Pakistan. Ra One was another massive hit! Bodyguard was highlight of the Eid and made huge money at ticket window! Films like Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Rokstar and Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara did very well too..
After such a successful year 2012 saw a very big jump in boxoffice. Jab Tak Hai jaan became first film ever to hit 1cr mark in a single day despite having a clash with Son Of Sardar. Well cinema saw very big step forward this year with even small Hindi films becoming Hit at boxoffice and we saw new screens coming in! There was not even a single local film that emerged blockbuster!
Then 2013 saw first film ever to hit 2cr in a single day and it was again Hindi film and it was done by Dhoom 3. This year also saw first film ever to hit 25cr mark in cinema making a new record and we saw fantastic growth at boxoffice.. Not only this films like Krrish 3 and Chennai Express emerged mega blockbusters. Then we saw super hits like Aashiqui 2, Race 2 and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. Now coming towards local cinema except Waar there was nothing to safe grace.
After one after another Hindi blockbusters cinemas started to increase manifold especially in Punjab that’s why Lahore became major contributor for the boxoffice. Another fantastic year for the cinema with 2014 seeing films like PK emerging All Time Blokcbuster and Kick giving massive 17cr despite releasing pre-Eid! Despite negative Word Of Mouth film like Happy new Year hit 10cr mark and we also saw big hits like Bang Bang and Khoobsurat. At local cinema only Na Maloom Afraad did well but that film too was only blockbuster in Karachi.
Cinema was reaching prime time due to one after another crowd puller Hindi film. As a result another local film Jawan Phir Nahi Ani hit 30cr becoming first film to hit that. But one blockbuster was never going to be okay for cinemas and that’s where Hindi films saved cinema! We saw clash of Dilwale and Bajirao mastani and both film added 30cr commutative! Then Bajrangi Bhaijaan added 22+cr and emerged mega blockbuster! And there were several hits! These hits gave regular footfall to the cinemas and these regular footfalls pushed local industry also.
But this year there has been ban on Hindi films since October. Post october this year was looking at record turnover due to films like Sultan and Actor In law and we were seeing massive increase in screen count! Sultan became first first film to hit 4cr in single day But it all got sad when we saw ban in October. Earlier it was said it will be just two Weeks ban and will be lifted before Ae Dil Hai Mushkil but it all got worse when it was not lifted due to Quetta attack but now it’s prolonged and cinemas have lost crores of rupees in the form of potential hits like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Dear Zindagi, Befikre and not only that, cinemas are loosing regular footfalls big time! Next in line is Dangal which was expected to be biggest release ever!
Back in 2010 not even a single film hit 30lacs in single day but in last six years we have saw such big growth that this year Sutlan hit 4cr in single day. No Industry survive with one or two hits a year, Industry always need regular footfalls and regular big films! Pakistani Industry is till not that grown! Hindi films were giving us multiple blockbusters and many hit films each year which was taking local industry up too! But Due to fast dip in the footfalls situation is getting very bad and we are seeing huge decrease of staffs at cinemad and screens are getting closed! If this ban is not lifted soon then situation will get out of hands in coming Weeks and we will be again reaching dark ages where there will be only few local releases which won’t be able to survive either and we will be left with one or two cinemas in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad!
